How do you find someone if all you have is a last name and a questionable address?

I received a strange piece of mail, and would like to answer back, but the USPS says the address is for a building that no longer exists. The only other information I have is one name, probably a last name.

How do you find someone if all you have is a last name and a questionable address?
It sound slike a scam. If you are serious, though, you could visit the library in the town it came from and look the address up in old city directories. They have a "Reverse" listing where people are listed by address order, not name order.

If you can't visit, the library would probably send you copies of pages if you sent them a donation, a SASE and the exact address you need.
Reply:When did you receive the mail? Was it addressed to you?

What is the return address? Is the mail first class?

Did you go to USPS.com to check the address? Or else, how did you know the address is no longer there?

How could the address disappear in a short period of time?

Is it possible the return address is fake?

It all sounds a little strange to me.

How to determine the last name of your child when you are unmarried?

I am unmarried and I wanted to know what rights the father has if you give the child his last name? Does that mean he could take the baby whenever he wants?

When it comes to rights of the father best talk to a lawyer. in most countries when you give birth to the baby and do not live with the father he doesnt have many rights, but he can fight for them, after all the baby is half his.

But he cannot take the baby whenever he wants, as thats not fair on you or the baby (espeically if youre breastfeeding)

It appears that the name Encinias (a version of Encinas, with a tilde over the n) is of Galician origin, in Northern Spain.

Guide to keeping your last name after marriage?

I am planning on keeping my last name after I'm married, but I'm wondering what kinds of hassles (insurance, joint bank accounts, etc.) my husband and I should expect to face because of this choice. Is there a book out there???

Also, we will be moving to Oklahoma shortly after the wedding and I'm wondering if there are certain laws in that state regarding different names for married couples. Thanks!

Guide to keeping your last name after marriage?
It's not nearly so complicated as to need a book. No states have laws that require you to change your name, so it's your choice. My sister's been married for 20 years and didn't change her name. Never had any kind of serious problem about it. It sometimes creates a funny moment when people think her last name is also her husband's last name. His first name is Brian. Her last name is Ryan, so some people think his name is Brian Ryan, which sounds funny. Our dad would introduce her as "Mrs. Jones", which made her crazy. They've never had problems with finances, banks, insurance companies, house ownership, hospital admittance, travel, etc.
Reply:Yes, I am sure that there will be many misunderstandings, but no one can make you change your name or deny you something because your husband and you don't share a name! Funny - I just wrote a blog on myspace bitching about how women have to change their names and that we should all start a movement where we either keep our last names or incorporate both names - I think that's kind of cool. That way the children won't choose a name. You will all keep your names and so on and so on. It would be a lot more complicated, though. Women should do what they want. Men wouldn't forsake the name of their family and father when they marry. We accept it like it's no big thing. Pain in the *** if you ask me! You'll probably have as much hassle changing names on everything you've ever been associated with as you would with insurance and hospital, etc.... more power to all of you!!!
Reply:I kept my last name with a hyphen... on the marriage certificate I listed both of our last names... my license and everything still has my maiden name. The biggest hassel that I have come across is with insurance and perscriptions, there's usuallly confusion as to what name they have me listed as. Other than that, no troubles really.
Reply:you will have insurance issues if one of the two of you carries the insurance for the other, it's workable, just a hassle; you will also have a hassle if one of the two of you is in the hospital...also workable, just a hassle......
Reply:there is no guide, just don't change it

What if Obama was white and his last name was Parker?

Would he be overwhelmingly our next President?

What if Obama was white and his last name was Parker?
He certainly wouldn't be the media darling that he is. What disturbs me most about him is not his race or his name it's his past as a Chicago politician. Anyone who grew up in the Chicago area knows how corrupt each and every one of those politicians is, it's unfortunate that there is not one exception to that rule going all the way up to Richard Daley the corrupt King of Chicago. While I admire McCain for his military service I can't say I have an abundance of confidence in his ability to be president either.
Reply:Their position on the issues and how I feel a person can function as President is what is important and still I can be mistaken. I wouldn't vote for a person because they are white, black, male or female.

We should vote our conscious, pray for that God's will be done and realize if it doesn't turn out the way we felt it should that God writes straight with crooked lines.

95% of blacks voting for Obama is probably due to the fact that one of their own is doing so well. If we were in their shoes, we might feel the same way.
Reply: I still wouldn't vote for him.I just do not like the man, and it is not because of his race. There is just something about him that scares me.

Besides, Oprah Winfrey is paying for his election--from what I have read anyway.
Reply:Name and skin color doesn't alter my personal voting habits.

However, the statistics show that it does still matter to some people and in some regions more than others, so I think this is a great question!
Reply:What makes you think that makes a difference? Grow up and join the 21st century.
Reply:no doubt.

How do I go about changing my last name and is costly?

I am a 21 year old male who lives in Texas and I would like to change my last name to my biological father'e last name.

How do I go about changing my last name and is costly?
In January 2007, Consumer Reports provided a very comprehensive guide to name change information that I have summarized:

1) Pay a filling fee ranging anywhere from $13 to $230 and obtain a court order. Usually you will need to publish a public notice of your name change (more on that later).

2) Go to the Internet and search for your state and "courts" (for example, South Carolina + courts):

Note, I've already done this and found the name-change form for South Carolina, which appears along with the name-change forms from some other states:

http://www.uspegalforms.com/changeofname...

Of course, you can also stop by your county court house for the paper work. You will also need to make sure that you meet the residency requirements for your state.

3) Hiring an attorney will probably expediate matters; however, fees start at about $200.

4) Some states require finger printing and background checks.

5) You will need to publish your name change petition in a "newspaper of general circulation".

6) File with the court, pay any court fees, and schedule a hearing. If the judge agrees that your name change isn't detrimental to anyone else, you have successfully changed your name. But your work has just begun.

7) Ask your county clerk for at least one-half dozen copies of your name-change decree (at $10 per copy). Visit the Department of Motor Vehicles for a new driver's license; ask Social Security for a new card (Form SS-5), or else download it at http://www.ssa.gov ; change your passport, sending to the the US Department of State your old passport along with a certified copy of your name-change order/or marriage license*. See http://www.travel.state.gov to downloard form DS-5504 or DS-82.

8) Notify every entity with whom you do business:

------Your employer to change paychecks, withholding, and W-2 forms

------credit card companies

------insurance carriers for home, life, auto, health

------attorneys for parents if you expect to inherit anything, so they can change their wills

------brokerage, stock, bonds, mutual funds, and any other possible financial accounts

------mortgage companies

------medical providers, for example, Blue Cross/Blue Shield

------College alumni associations

------County tax assessors

------State licensing boards

------Your children's schools

------Utilities (telephone, cell phone, electricity, gas, water, cable TV, Internet provider)

How about just using a nickname?

______

*Of course, if you are an unmarried woman, you can pick a willing groom and get married, but you will still have to go through steps 7 and 8--not to mention picking out a china pattern.

Source(s):

http://www.consumerreports.org/crolperso...
Reply:It is not particularly costly for a legal proceeding and most attorneys will not charge that much.

Aside from the cost of the attorney to properly draft the pleadings, the other two major costs will be the filing fees and the cost of putting a legal notice in an appropriate publication. The legal notice is designed to give notice to potential creditors about the name change so that it is not used to avoid legitimate claims.

Basically, what is involved is filing the pleading, putting the notice in the paper, explaining to the judge the reason for the change, and having a judgment entered approving of the name change.

You will need to keep a certified copy of the judgment along with the birth certificate for getting a new driver's license with your new name and for renewing the license or getting a passport in the future.
Reply:I'm not positively sure how you would go about it. Maybe contact the Social Security Administration since you'll have to have it changed on your SS card as well. It shouldn't be very costly, if anything at all since it costs little or nothing for a woman to change her last name after marriage. It may be as simple as going to the court house or to the Vital Statistics office in your state/county to have it done. Check with some attorneys in your area that deal with family law, they may be of more help.

How do I go about changing my last name?

I'm not married or anything. I just want to change my last name, to separate myself from my father and his family who I've been out of contact with for years, and want nothing to do with.

Is it simple to do. I heard it takes a lot of time and generally costs around $150.00 to do.

But how do I do it?

How do I go about changing my last name?
It's very simple to do. You can get everything you need to legally change your last name at - http://www.legalformsbank.biz/namechange... - and you can learn more about the process there.
Reply:if you are in the US,

you petition the court for a name change.

if you don't need a lawyer, i doubt if it costs that much.

in the US , you are allowed to use (almost) any name you want, so long as you aren't using the name for fraudulent purposes.

So - go down to the court house, and ask someone at a window, what forms are necessary - and where you start.
Reply:1 Go to your civil registry and relate your plight or

2 go to law library or purchase a civil code and go to change of name

see the grounds for change of name whether or not you can avail of it.

3.see a lawyer if you can
Reply:A paralegal document preparation service will probably be a good place to have the paperwork done. You can also check out Nolo Press self-help books at your local library or a bookstore.

How quickly can you have a babies last name changed?

The babies mother recently wish to have the babies last name changed to hers, which i have no problem with. Could anyone tell me the cost and the processes of the name change. We are currently undergoing DNA testing.

How quickly can you have a babies last name changed?
you will have to go to the registry of birth, deaths and marriages

i changed my sons first name and it was very easy, you need proof of residency and ID for both the parents, you need your passports and birth certificate or citizenship certificate if not born in australia. if you want to change the name urgently i.e in five days you pay extra ( i paid $165), it costs $121 for normal processing that takes 10 days. i think there has been a slight change to the prices

use this link to access all the information you need.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/

good luck
Reply:I have no idea on the cost involved, but if your name is on the birth certificate then you'll have to file paperwork with the court and probably go before a judge in order to have your name removed. It's possible that you'll also have to sign paperwork terminating your parental rights if you're their biological father, but I'm not sure.
Reply:It can take up to six weeks to get the paperwork completed and filed and have the birth certificate changed. I suggest you start the process as soon as possible.

It is about 25.00 here, but it may be different where you live.
Reply:it really depends on the state. i know where i live, after the dna testing is done, the father can petition the court to have the babies last name changed during the visitation/child support hearing.
Reply:i am sure that would depend all on the state, but i honestly could not tell you about how much and how long. sorry.

How do I change my child's last name in the state of Illinois?

I am a single parent with low income. The courts tell me $300 and a lot of paperwork will eventually get it done. But I can't afford that. They gave me a packet to do it myself and it's overwhelming. Soemone please help.

How do I change my child's last name in the state of Illinois?
Just start at page one, and fill out what they give you... when you take it in, they will go though it and unwittingly tell you what you have made mistakes on, its a great way for free legal assistance. Also see if your state has a legal advocate, or friend of the court's office to help.
Reply:Yeah, unfortunately there is always a lot of paperwork and you do have to pay.

Try calling a local law school (I'm not sure what part if Illinois you are in) they often have law students who work to help people in the community with things like that. You can also try calling the pro-bono office, but since you don't have a real pressing case and just want to change the name, they probably won't help you.

Here's the pro bono referral office

http://www.ag.state.il.us/about/probono....

They also have contact info for the law schools.

How do you decide to name the child if the parents have different last names?

Give the child the mother's last name? The father's last name?

What if the parents are married but kept their names? What if they are NOT married?

How do you decide to name the child if the parents have different last names?
In either situation, the choice is completely up to the parents.

If the parents are married with different last names, I think it is more traditional to give the child the father's last name. This would also be a situation in which you might want to hyphenate. You could also give the child the mother's last name as a second middle name (something like Emily Grace Anderson Jones. Of course, if the mother kept her last name because the father's last name was something AWFUL, then give the child the mother's last name, please!

If the parents are not married, I think it's more traditional to give the child the mother's last name. A lot of parents choose not to do this, though, especially if the father and the mother are still dating or if the father plans to be very involved in the child's life. If I were in that situation and the father of the baby were around, I would probably give my child the father's last name. If I had any doubts about him sticking around, though, the baby would probably get my last name. This would also be a good situation in which to consider a hyphenated last name.
Reply:Usually if I wanted to use both last names, I would name the baby with the mother's name as a middle name and the father's name as the last name. I would not hyphenate them. I would do the same if each parent was keeping their original birth last name whether married or not.

If the father was definitely not going to be in the picture, then I would use the mother's last name. If I wanted the father's name in there, then I would definitely put the father's name as the middle name.

As a mother, it is your choice!
Reply:If I was in this situation this is what I would do:

Example:

Baby=Addison(First Name)

Mother=Johnson(Lastname)

Father=Wray(Lastname)

I would call the baby Addison Johnson-Wray.

This is what most people do, or they just use the fathers name. If the father is no longer caring for the child though many stick with the mothers surname.

HOPE I HELPED
Reply:well if they have different last names just put the mothers last name first and then the fathers last name
Reply:Most give it the fathers last name.

If the father is out of the picture then the mothers last name would be good.

If your married but kept your names you can do something like Smith-Jones.
Reply:Always give the child the Father's last name.

If you wanted to use both - you can hyphenate the 2 last names, using the Mother's last name first. For instance:

Dad: John Jones

Mom: Jane Smith

Baby: James Smith-Jones
Reply:I gave my daughter her father's last name, but I regret it now. If I could change it, I would give her my own last name instead. FYI - I am not married and wasn't at the time.
Reply:My mum had 2 children with a man named Jason Cox.

They got married and the 2 kids were called Abigail Cox %26amp; Gabriella Cox.

My mum got together with my dad, Mark Hunter, they didn't get married and when they had me they gave me my mothers last name (which has always stayed at Cox) to make things easier for me, because people would ask why I had a different surname etc.

If you no your going to stay with your husband/boyfriend, give the baby his last name, if not, give the baby your own!

But also see which last name flows along with the first name.

P.S (My name is Crystalle, but my nickname is Crissy!)

Hope I Helped :D
Reply:you could do the hyphen thing (which is what I'd do) or pick one from a hat=)If not married, I wasn't with my oldest son, I gave him my name cuz i knew no matter what he would always be with me!It turned out, i married his dad when he was1 but divorced him when he was 2 I am still very happy w/ my decision and he is 15 now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:technically you usually give the child the mothers maiden name but then when you all get married you would change the babys last name. but you need to talk it over with boyfriend
Reply:I don't really konw, go to ask.com
Reply:traditionally a baby is given his father's last name.

it sort of depends who has the coolest last name.

i like how people are given children of married parents or i suppose even unmarried both parents' names. like hyphenated.
Reply:If parents can not decide, legally the child will have two last names, the order of the names alphabetically
Reply:Personally, I'll be using my last name for the baby. He'll be on the birth certificate, but it's me who's giving birth, taking he or she to the docs appointments, to first day of nursery, school etc etc.

If at some point we got married in future, then there's still the option of the child's name being changed. I just don't see the point in giving the baby his name, just because it's traditional, I think it's easier for him/her to have my name.
Reply:Married, the child gets the husband last name

The wife, at school, can use her married name to make life easier for the child

A lot of working mom's, use their last name at work, keep everything in their last name

When the child is in school, they use their married last name for the child

Not married

You can do any of the five

1. First middle your last

2. First middle his last

3. First your last, his last

4. First Middle yours-his last

5. First Middle his-yours last

Any of the above are right

You and the baby father should agree on one
Reply:If they're married with separate names, flip a coin :)

Otherwise, the babe gets the mom's name.
Reply:If you and the father plan to be together the father. Make sure he is a good guy. If you plan to have more children (different man) Yours, so if you get married you can alter it. Like Lee Jones could be Lee Jones-Thomas like momy's name.
Reply:I believe the child automaticially will receive the fathers family name if you are married.. if not it will be the mother's name the child will get..you are married so the child will get the father's family name...xxx
Reply:the mom and her family use their name
Reply:Typically, you either give the child your last names together with a dash in the middle (i.e. Smith-Smythe), or you give the child the father's last name and, if you are really passionate about the mother's last name, use that as a first or middle name.

There's no right way, but there are some wrong ways. For example, giving the child the mother's last name makes people wonder if the kid is the mother's from another marriage or if they aren't married and the kid was born out of wedlock. While there isn't any stigma attached to that anymore, it does raise a lot of questions that you don't want your child to have to suffer through answering.

Secondly, whatever you choose to do, do not decide to give one child one last name and the other child the other last name. Again, you are just putting these children in awkward situations, where they will have to be asked why they don't have the same name as their brother/sister, etc. Plus, since your siblings are with each other for their entire lives, it's nice for them to have something like common names to bond them together.
Reply:Depends on the situation really and what you're comfortable with. For instance:

Mother will have full custody because the father hardly if at all, wants to be involved. The child should have the mother's last name.

The father chooses to be as involved as humanly possible in his child's life or is married to the father, you two need to sit down and make a choice between his, hers or hyphenating between the two last names, i.e. - Smith-Jones
Reply:If you're with the dad, the child should have his dad's last name, if you're no longer with him but the dad is going to play an active role in the child's life, I'd still say dad's last name, otherwise, if he's not going to be involved at all, your last name.

If you're married, and you didn't change your last name to your husbands, either the child still gets his father's last name, or you hypenate it : your last name - your husbands last name.

Those are the "rules" most people go by..
Reply:combine them together and make up a new last name

Where does the last name Gish derive from?

I have been searching for months and can't find any answers.

Where does the last name Gish derive from?
According to www.ancestry.com it German,

Gish

German (Gisch): from a short form of the Germanic personal name Gisulf, from gisil 鈥榩ledge鈥? 鈥榟ostage鈥? 鈥榥oble youth鈥?(see Giesel) + wolf, wulf 鈥榳olf鈥?

hope this helps.
Reply:Hi JME,

%26gt; I have been searching for months . . .

Just a computer and vocabulary hint. IJM should get the 10 points, since she gave you the right answer first.

Last names are called "surnames". I used Google and three words:

Gish surname origin

in 0.18 seconds I had 15,000+ hits. The first was

http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Gish-genea...

If you click on "Name Meaning" on that site, you get the definition.

Hit #2 was house of names, which has accurate meanings, sometimes, but tries to sell you "Family" coats of arms. #3 was all about Lillian Gish, a famous slient movie star, who is probably the most famous Gish in the USA.

If you use "surname" instead of "last name" in Google (or other reputable search engines) when you are looking for genealogy or family history, you'll get better results. If you use last name you'll get a gazillion pages telling you "Acme Mortgage is the last name you need to know when you want to re-finance" and "Fly-by-Nite is the last name in discount travel fares".

Happy searching!

What are the legalities of giving my baby a different last name than mine?

I am pregnant and single. The father is nowhere in the picture. I was raised by my mom and only had a passing relationship with my father although I have his last name. I would like to give my baby my mother's last name since I feel that is the family we really belong to. Is that legal?

What are the legalities of giving my baby a different last name than mine?
In most states it's perfectly legal. Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda named their son Troy Garity. Why? So he wouldn't be burden with his parents names.
Reply:I think in most states you can give your baby whatever name you wish. The only thing that HAS to be on the birth certificate that you cannot change are the names of the parents.

Call the Office of Vital Statistics in your state and ask.

When changing childs last name after marriage, will I be required to notify father?

I want to change my childs last name after I get married but Im wondering are they going to require that I notify his biological father. I am the custodial parent and he is ordered to pay child support but never has and even the state agency cant locate him? How will they locate him if I have no address for him?

When changing childs last name after marriage, will I be required to notify father?
I've actually been through this.

YES, you have to notify him. if you don't know where he's at.. I think you have to do the last known address.

You go up to the courthouse and get a change of name form. its pretty short - and you have to send a copy - certified mail - to the dad

its like $100. you don't need a laywer for this.

my childrens father actually brought a lawyer to court to fight the name change. - but, in the end I won because he had my maiden name.. and the courts said it would make the child feel more like a family unit.

But- now i'm wishing it didn't go through - because I married my childs dad.20 yrs later.and my son is left with his step dads last name... he's older now so would be weird to change now.

Reply:Hi,

as far as i know the father needs to sign a consent.

however, if he cannot be located then a special circumstance/precedent may exist where the name change could take place without his consent.

you would need to consult the agency and/or an attorney.
Reply:In most jurisdictions, the father must consent to such a name change. In some jurisdictions, you may not change a child's name unless your husband adopts the child - which he can't do unless the father has terminated his parental rights.
Reply:If his name is used for the child currently, you will need to contact him and have him give up rights to the child in order to change it. He is still the biological father and as such does have certain rights concerning his child.

Mike, this lady is working to find the same answer as you are. There are only 4 listed in the social security death index, all who died in New Jersey.

Not all names have a meaning, despite efforts from some commercial web sites, that tell you different.

http://www.oldnewark.com/births/brag.php

this shows several births in early New Jersey, but notice that there are variations on the spelling. Interesting that even with the different spellings, familysearch.org (which normally picks up alternate spellings) found nothing.

It seems that Essex co, New Jersey is the best location to search... if you can identify your grandfather/ gr grandfather, whoever is likely to be seen in 1930 census...that would tell you where that person was born..and where the parents of that person were born. 1900, 1910, 1920 would also be good for this.. in fact, the earlier the better.

I don't sub to ancestry.com, or I'd see if I could pick that up. Perhaps someone here will come in behind me, and do it. Or, ancestry offers trial subscriptions for 14 days.

Overall.. if you have a really rare name, it is common that what you know today was not the original spelling. So search engines would be less likely to find it. The other option is that the family migrated close to 1880. The immigration files at ancestry are good, but mainly if they came through New York. Not everyone did.
Reply:Ancestry.Com shows a Charles Budamus(Charles Bredamus) on the 1910 census of St Joseph Indiana, South Bend Ward 4. The name is hard to read on the original image so they show two spellings in their index.

It shows he was born in Michigan but both parents were born in Germany.

On the 1930 census of Essex New Jersey, Orange. They show a James and Pauline Bredamus both born in New Jersey and on the original image, parents of both born in Germany

This was a tough one.

What does the last name Huwieler mean in German?

There's an alternative spelling of Huweieler if that makes a difference. And also, where does it come from?

What does the last name Huwieler mean in German?
Huwiler is of Alemanian-German origin. Family name from Switzerland. Referring to somebody from a village of Huwil. Wil meaning, specifically, to be a little hamlet (Weiler in High German) and quite frequent in town names in Switzerland.
Reply:I can't find anything for that name but it turns out that there is a more common spelling of that name in Germany. It's Huwiler. There are quite a few people with that last name.

It is definitely not Modern German. And I think it comes more from the Southern German regions or Switzerland
Reply:It's just a last name...can't be translated or has no other meaning.

What is a decent price for a tattoo of my last name down my side/ribs?

My last name is Pelletier if that helps anyone..and i want to get it in old english script. not too sure on the size of the lettering, but nothing too big and out of proportion.

What is a decent price for a tattoo of my last name down my side/ribs?
I personally wouldnt dare get a tatoo . Have you heard the risks of it ?
Reply:Depends on the colors you want, the size, the detail...also depends on the artists expertise. The better tattoo artists charge more because they do better work. One thing to remember, a cheaply priced tattoo is just that...CHEAP. Also, look to see if your artist has a minimum (ie. $65/hr). Do your homework on local tattoo artists...I have a great one here in Cincinnati that I would recommend to anyone.

Hope this helps.
Reply:my bf got his name down his ribs. i think his was around 200 .

its extremely painful. so remember to eat before you go and drink water and most importantly, breathe properly.
Reply:It depends on the size of the lettering. Also diffrent tattoo shops have different pricing so make sure you shop. Every area and state is different something that cost 750 in the south will cost 1100 up north. It is by location go to the different shops tell them what you want and the script and get an estimate probably run you over a grand since your last name is long. Like i said it is a different price by location and shop also more experienced artists cost a lot more than an apprentice. Just make sure before you get ink done that it is what you really want. ALWAYS check out the tattoo parlor before you get inked. Best of luck.
Reply:5-10 $$ per letter.That's for a cursive script,about 1 x 1 inch per letter.I'd say 100 dollars would be more than enough.
Reply:The price of a tattoo depends on...

1. The hourly rate of the tattooist

2. The speed at which they work

3. The size of the canvas they are working on

So as you can see, it is pretty hard for someone on here to give you an accurate answer. Only a consultation with a tattooist can give you that answer.

Also bear in mind that you get what you pay for which is why there are lots of people out there in the world trying to cover up their regret.
Reply:The price is going to depend on the shop and artist. The best way to get a price is to go to the shop you want to have your tattoo work done at and talk to the artist. There is a saying that goes.... Good tattoos aren't cheap and Cheap tattoos aren't cheap. I hope this helps. Good Luck !
Reply:if its in black and around a medium size lettering my guess is 100-150 depending on what city your in. Good luck

Spears is Scottish

The spears surname comes from the Old English word "spere," meaning "spear." It may have orginally been a nickname for a tall skinny person, or perhaps for a hunter skilled at using the spear.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Speir, Spier, Spears, Speirs, Spiers, Speer, Speers, Spere, Speres, Spire, Spires, Speyer, Speier, Speery and many more.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Stephen Spear who settled in Virginia in 1685; Robert Speare settled in Virginia in 1653; James Spears settled in New England in 1761; Alexander Speir settled in Wilmington N.C. in 1774.

Ratcliff is English

The name ratcliff was carried to England in the enormous movement of people that followed the Norman Conquest of 1066. The ratcliff family lived in Nottingham, at Radcliffe. The name of this place translates as red cliff, and indicates that originally the town was distinguished by its proximity to such a landmark on the east side of Irwell.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Radcliffe, Radcliff, Radclyffe, Ratliffe, Ratliff, Ratlife and many more.

First found in Nottingham, where they had settled after the Conquest.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: James and Jane Radcliff settled in New England in 1685; Alexander Radcliff settled in New York in 1803; John Radcliffe settled in Philadelphia in 1775.

Last name???????????

if you heard that somebody has the last name Banker what ethnicity would you guess that that person is just by the sound of their last name?

Last name???????????
Classic trick question over here.

Names do NOT reliably indicate nationality or ethnic background.

True story from just this morning... my little neighborhood store, Swami's (yes) run by mom and pop. Mom is from India..Dad from Pakistan. I affectionately calll him Swami. When we got to talking this morning, I finally learned his real name, which is Robert Fernandes. Huh? Yep. As he explained.. his ancestor went from Portugal to Pakistan during WW1.

Names are just labels.
Reply:It could have been orriginated in Europe England and neighboring countries,it dates back before the american colonization..... It was evident that the apellation was nobble. Banker was probably the people who goes to the bank and deposited valuable things. From then banker as nicknames were became more popular and so the surname Banker were carried and perpetuated.

Are you writing a story? Tell me a little more about the character and her ethnic background and I might be able to help. I think it's cool when character names have some meaning behind them

April Marchington (a little silly)

April Mayberry (also silly)

April Mathews

April Grey (I like the repeated long A sound in this one)

Last name?

Im writing a book and I need a last name to go with 'India'. Any suggestions? I really need help! If you answer then I really appreciate it. Thanks.

Last name?
Johnson. Make is as basic as possible, to counterbalance the slight exoticness of "India".
Reply:Robinson. I agree with answer #1. My sister have a unique first name and our last name is simple. It helps balance it all out.
Reply:I would say it depends on what kind of book you are writing if you wanted it to be more odd or humourous i would think of something that rhymes. Something more serious however you want something more simple since the first name is so unique.

for funny i would go Colindia (India Colindia had a very strange life)

Serious Hastings...i dont know it sounds nice to me

good luck
Reply:"Ink"... that was my first thought.
Reply:India Glear sounds very intelligent and doctor-like, but I also like India Vear. Maybe you should look up last names with important meanings that your character matches up to, and by your own instinct, pick a last name that you like.

Green It balances, since india is exotic

Salvonne (Say Sal-von) It sounds like an adventure name

McFallows (Say mik-faal-oes) It sounds irish, and true
Reply:Needs to be a two syllable word to offset the three in India. Something oriental sounding, but with a western base.

Try Sonlee, or Tylin, Bralee,Barjay

my friends last name is mughal, is she related to that empire of india?

Last name?
The founder of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat was Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, alayhe salam. His father's name was Mirza Ghulam Murtaza and his mother鈥檚 name was Chiragh Bibi (lady of the lamp). His grandfather was Mirza Ata Muhammad (d.1814), and his great grand father was Mirza Gul Muhammad (d.1800).

Hadhrat Ahmad (AS) belonged to the Birlas branch of the respectable Mughal family. The surname of this family is Mirza that is why all members of this family use Mirza as their surname. Mirza Hadi Beg was the forefather of this family who migrated to India in 1530 from his hometown Samarqand with two hundred others during the reign of Mughal King Zaheer al-Din Babur. They settled along the Beyas river in the Indian province of Punjab. Mirza Hadi Beg was appointed Qazi (judge) with jurisdiction over seventy villages around Qadian. He founded a village called Islampur, later the name changed to Islampur Qazi Majhi, which over time was shortened to Qazi Majhi, then only Qazian, finally changed into Qadian

Last name?

I'm working on a book, and I need to figure out the last name of my main characters parents (she's an orphan, so she doesn't meet them until later). Any good surname suggestions for people named Thomas, Melanie, and Ivy?

Last name?
My source of surnames is the US Census Bureau's list of surnames from most to least popular. Every name in America is there. It is a blast to surf through and match up names. I like ones that are unusual, but not too unusual. I keep the site bookmarked so I can get to it easily. Pax-C

What is the origin of the last name Sapalio?

I believe it may either be Polish, Lithuanian or Latvian. Anyone have any idea?

What is the origin of the last name Sapalio?
The very few listings that I've been able to find at ancestry.com and ellisisland.org have the origin as Italy.

You'll need to trace the person's (or your) specific ancestry through documented records to be sure of the person's origin. You can't determine origin or ethnicity solely by the surname (which is only a tiny piece of one's total ancestry.)

Who is the greatest player whose last name has only four letters?

I would guess it would be between Mays and Ruth, I'd go with Mays but wouldn't argue those who say Ruth.

No, actually, Ruth. Definitely Babe Ruth.

Reply:Parker Lawson Scott sounds a bit stiff for a baby. It reminds me of a successful businessman which is a good thing but it won't suit the child until he is in his 30's. Parker is cute. Lawson not so much.

Need Last name origin of the name Chepko?

I have searched and search for a neighbor, and cannot find any records of the country it comes from.

Any ideas or suggestions, even educated guesses?

Need Last name origin of the name Chepko?
I found 2 different groups of immigrants with that surname using that exact spelling...there were another 100 using a close variant.

Three were Magyars (Hungarians), but six were from Poland. In Polish records I've found the same people using a number of variant spellings (very common because of the literacy rate being so low). 4 were from 呕ydowo Pozna艅 and also used the spelling Czepko or Ciepko/Ciepka. The others were from Szamotu艂y. There were two other Chepkos who were Polish and came to the US, but they lived in France for several years and that's the "last residence" listed. Their hometowns aren't listed on the manifests.

Amongst the Magyar lines, I can find the records for a mother and child with the hometown listed, but I can't decypher the writing for the town. I can tell you they listed that they were moving to Sharon Pennsylvania and that the husband (Miso Chepko) had come ahead of the rest of the family and was already living in Sharon. I haven't found his immigration records to compare. There's also a 35 year old man named Paul Chepko, last living in Budapest but declaring himself a German citizen, who came over in 1902. His contact information in the US didn't film well and is pretty much illegible. But one thing is clear, he was probably a German-Pole who had been living in Hungary (based on all the margin notes, etc).

You're probably looking at two families (one in each country) where the names developed independently of each other. But in both cases, the immigration was in roughly the last 100 years, which isn't much digging to do. Find her grandparents' death certificates and you should have the answer to your question.

ETA: I also found a WWI draft registration for Chepko, Wladimir 18 Sep 1893 Selets Russia. He was living in New Castle DE. Selets is in what we now call Belarus. I also found our immigrant, Paul Chepko, was living in Westmoreland PA in 1917, his DOB was 20 May 1878.

has just 14, all in the USA, which strongly suggests it was something else in Europe (or spelled differently). Does your neighbor know who her parents were and when they died? ( Some people don't, sadly.)

If so, their birth, death or marriage certificates; obituaries, funeral home records, SSN applications or cemetery records may tell you who THEIR parents were. From there you work backwards, one generation at a time.

has 10 entries for the surname. Look there. You might get very, very lucky.

Reply:Italian.

All Italian names end in a vowel. (A, E, I, O...hardly U still a vowel though)

Maybe Polish or Greek, though?

Not sure. =]]
Reply:Several persons gave you guesses... the problem with that is that genealogy is totally against guesses. The whole idea of research is finding reliable historical records that apply to your own individual ancestry, not just to a surname.

In order to find where your own ancestor came from, you start by working back from yourself, making sure that you document each step. Many times, person try 'jumping' ahead and sabatoge the whole thing, by missing records that may have the solution.

The best example might be looking at the census for 1930, which may have YOUR ancestor living with his/her parents. Not only will that include the birth place of each person in the house, it asks for where the person's parents were born.

99% of the time, the problem lies in looking for a general answer (where does the name come from?) instead of specific (where was gr grandpa Chepko born?).

All you need to do is shift your thinking in terms of what you are asking.
Reply:There are 2 on the 1900 census living in Steubenville Ohio. They were born in Austria. However, they could have been Hungarian, Serb, Croatian etc.

The 1910 census had 12 living in Redstone, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Illinois, Donora Washington, and Mount PLeasant Pennsylvania. . Three were born in Hungary,

two in Russia, two in Austria and 5 in Pennsylvania.

The same surname can come from more than one nationality. The only way your neighbor would know if it is her family name is to trace her ancestry starting with herself and working back one generation at a time.

Anytime she wants to do this there are lots of people on this board that can give her or you some great tips and advice.
