How to determine the last name of your child when you are unmarried?

I am unmarried and I wanted to know what rights the father has if you give the child his last name? Does that mean he could take the baby whenever he wants?

How to determine the last name of your child when you are unmarried?

Reply:No you can name your child anything you like, including the last name, my sister gave her children all of her ex boyfriends last name to match her oldest daughter.

When it comes to rights of the father best talk to a lawyer. in most countries when you give birth to the baby and do not live with the father he doesnt have many rights, but he can fight for them, after all the baby is half his.

But he cannot take the baby whenever he wants, as thats not fair on you or the baby (espeically if youre breastfeeding)

goodluck
Reply:I am unmarried also, and have two kids that have two different dads, I gave them each their dads last name. I now wish I would have given them my last name. I have been told that the dad can take the baby whenever and wherever he wants, unless you have soul custody. So it is up to you but I would think about all the ups and downs before you do give the baby his name. Good Luck.
Reply:I think it depends where you are from

where I live I couldn't even give my child her fathers last unless he signed the birth cert.

but as for taking the child whenever and wherever never heard of that unless that is a law where you live but that sounds not right

call a lawyers office or govt. office
