How do you find someone if all you have is a last name and a questionable address?

I received a strange piece of mail, and would like to answer back, but the USPS says the address is for a building that no longer exists. The only other information I have is one name, probably a last name.

How do you find someone if all you have is a last name and a questionable address?
It sound slike a scam. If you are serious, though, you could visit the library in the town it came from and look the address up in old city directories. They have a "Reverse" listing where people are listed by address order, not name order.

If you can't visit, the library would probably send you copies of pages if you sent them a donation, a SASE and the exact address you need.
Reply:When did you receive the mail? Was it addressed to you?

What is the return address? Is the mail first class?

Did you go to USPS.com to check the address? Or else, how did you know the address is no longer there?

How could the address disappear in a short period of time?

Is it possible the return address is fake?

It all sounds a little strange to me.
Reply:192.com have an automated service that you can use to track down people, but if you don't have too much information to work with then you are better using a company that specialises in tracing people, there are plenty online that do this.

I used http://www.findermonkey.co.uk last year and was pretty happy with the results.
