My wife changed her last name same as mine this year 2008. Now here social security card show new name. But in all the documents her last name is old one. How do I show name change in federal return (There is no option in Turbo Tax) But there is an option for State return?
How do I mention change of last name in IRS return in turbo tax?
The name on your federal tax return must match the name the Social Security Administration (SSA) has on file for you. File a form SS-5 with your local SSA office. The form is available there or at www.socialsecurity.gov . It takes about two weeks for the change to be completed.
Reply:If you are using turbo tax online they have a help section where you can actually talk to someone that can help. I swear I saw it when I did mine.
Reply:at the beginning you should have had to verify all of last years information and you can change it there. There is no specific question for just a name change. Just go to the personal information page and simply change it. Just in case chances are the IRS hasn’t updated that info and the return might get rejected due to that. If so you will have to keep her maiden name until next tax year… Good Luck
