How long do I have to change my last name after I get married?
It depends where you live. best best is to go to your county clerk and ask what the new laws are.

Here in CA, starting Jan. 1 2009 you have to sign your new legally changed name (if you choose) when you sign your marriage licenses. And that is your new legal document.

Now I was married last year and I have not changed it yet and there is no deadline I simply have to do it the old way and go down to the social security office and what ever I change it to on my social card is my new legal name.

They just don't allow that here anymore. If you marry after the the 1st of the year now and you don't change it when you sign your marriage certificate you are required to go to court and get a court order by a judge to change it any other time after that!

So go to your county clerk's office and find out according to where you live..Its different depending on yoru county and your state!
Reply:i don't think so. i live in another state, but as long as you have your marriage certificate you should be able to just bring that to the DMV and also send to the ssn office to change your last name.
Reply:Typically there's no time limit. When you're ready, go to http://www.namethatbride.com - it's got all the forms, instructions, and even a checklist. And it's a free resource! Good luck.
Reply:No time limit really but it is best to do it as soon as possible. just notify your social security office and be done with it
