What steps do you have to take to get your last name legally changed?

One of my girlfriends and her boyfriend don't want to get married, but she wants his last name, what steps does she have to take do that? and how long will it take for her to get her last name changed and how much will she have to pay the court to do it?

What steps do you have to take to get your last name legally changed?
Tell her she's a fool to take his last name if they're not getting married. It is a long process that is a real pain in the butt. I'm married, have my husband's last name, and will be dropping it when the divorce is final.

It will be costly and pointless for her to do something like that for him if they are not legally married.
Reply:This is a relatively minor matter. File for a name change and have it officially changed via court order.

What percent of Americans are considered Hispanics by their Language, Last Name, Ethnicity, Culture or color ?

I include " color" because America uses white and black to classify people.

What percent of Americans are considered Hispanics by their Language, Last Name, Ethnicity, Culture or color ?
About 35% in the United States. There are Hispanic whites you know, they are descendants of Spaniards from Europe. Even Filipinos have Spanish last names.

How much does it cost to change your first or last name?

Im probablly gunna change my last name, but i think it costs money, and ive gotten mixed answers from people like 50 dollars a letter or something like that, does anyone actually know how much it costs to change either your first, or last name?

How much does it cost to change your first or last name?
i think it depends on what state you live in, but i found a website. so here:

http://www.namechangelaw.com/states.htm

hope it helps.
Reply:Unless you put it in your question, we can't tell what country you are in. It is the most frustrating thing Yahoo does. It doesn't matter if you go into domestic Yahoo or one of the International Yahoos - UK, Australia, Canada, India - all of the questions in English go into one big "pot".

In Stanislaus County, California, you call the clerk at the county courthouse. You fill out a form and pay $320. You also take out a Legal Notice in a local newspaper for four weeks. That cost is in addition to the $320. If no one objects, you get your decree.

Every time you apply for a new passport, driver's license, etc. you will need to mail in or show a notarized copy of the decree. If you have to mail one in and don't get it back, chalk up another $25 or so.

The procedure is the same in all counties in California, although the cost may vary. I suspect the procedure is about the same in most states in the USA, although the cost and the length of time may vary.

If you are in the UK, say so and one of the UK people will explain deed polls to you.

The cost will be the same no matter what length your new name is; Stanislaus Jablonski or Joe Fox, it is one price.
Reply:its $500 and its a hell of a long as procedure it will be about like 300 pages and soo many letters and phone calls and yea.

Where does the last name Coughlin come from?

What does it mean? It's not to common

Where does the last name Coughlin come from?
My husband's last name is Coughlin-Ammadon, yes, it's an odd sort of name. The name was originally Scottish, but when the Irish came over to the U.S. and all over Europe because of the potato famine, things were mixed, if you know what I mean. Thus we have the Scots-Irish and Scottish and Irish Americans when the name was transferred over. My husband is Irish.
Reply:I found this for,

Surname: Coughlin

This name, with variant spelling Coghlan, Co(u)ghlin and Cohalan, is an Anglicized form of two distinct Gaelic Irish sept names, the first being MacCochlain of County Offaly, and the latter, O Cochlain of County Cork. The Gaelic prefix "mac" indicates "son of" and "O", "male descendant of", plus the personal byname "cochlan" meaning "a short hooded cloak"; hence, "descendant of the cowled or hooded one". The MacCoughlan territory comprised the modern barony of Garry castle, County Offaly, and they had many strongholds in the Banagher - Clonmacnois area. Their chief was known as Chief of Delvin MacCoughlan. Records show that in 1665 two MacCoughlan families possessed over 3,400 acres of land in Co. Offaly. The (O) Coughlans of County Cork belonged to the baronies of Carbery and Ballymore where the name was most numerous at the time of Petty's "census" (1659), as it is to-day. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of MacCoughlain of Co. Offaly, which was dated circa 1150, "The Annals of the Four Masters", during the reign of Dermot Mac Murrough, known as "The King of Ulster", 1134 - 1171. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Hope this helps.

How do change my childs last name to the name of my new husband? I do not want a full adoption.?

My exhusband is still in the picture but the kids want the last name of my new husband. He is a much more involved father. My exhusband pays no child support.

How do change my childs last name to the name of my new husband? I do not want a full adoption.?
Well, I don't know what state you live in, but in Wisconsin, you may change you child's name up until 1 year old. After that, you need consent from the biological father to do that. And if still, no luck there, the child may change his/her name on their own at age 11. It's another whole petition to the court thing. Good Luck!
Reply:you can go to social security office to start it only cost about 20 bucks.then the court house not much to it really
Reply:All you have to do is fill out a name change form at the county courthouse. It's pretty easy. The fee varies by state, though.

You may want to think about changing your children's names to be your own last name, just in case this guy doesn't stick around. If you changed your name to the new husban'ds name, though, that's fine.

How long dose it take to change my last name into my wife's last on my Green Card?

i heard that it could take 6 to 1 year to correct any error or change any info on a green card? and that i should file for card replacement in order to start the process, and i can't trun in my green card and stay without it all this time cause i cant get any employment whats so ever without it.

Thanks for your answers in advance.

How long dose it take to change my last name into my wife's last on my Green Card?
You want to change your last name on your green card so that it reads your wife's last name? Most men do not take their wife's last name. If you want your green card to show that your last name has changed, your I-90 application must include the order, issued by a court of competent jurisdiction, changing your name.

You will receive evidence in the form of a temporary Form I-551 to use while your I-90 is pending. You'll still be able to look for employment.
Reply:I don't even think this is even legal you cannot take on her last name it does not work that way in this country.
Reply:Yes, it can take a while, but it is not necessary. You wont need to change her last name to yours until you renew the card. In the interim, she will just present a copy of your marriage certificate along with her passport to support the different name on the green card.

What is the origin of the last name Severson?

My Grandmother's maiden name is that. I think this name is name is a Americanization of Sivertsen or Sivertson which is Scandinavian, Icelandic. I already know it's english or irish. Tell me what do you think, Help!!

What is the origin of the last name Severson?
Severson is not a name with an origin in England or Ireland, that is not to say that someone of that name was not born in England or Ireland, it does mean that someone in their ancestry most likely came from Scandinavia or, just possibly, Germany.

Severson

Last name origin %26amp; meaning:

Probably an Americanized form of Scandinavian Sivertsen or Sivertson or of German Sievertsen, patronymic of Sievert.

Edit: I have just made a search for any Severson's in Britain today, excluding the Irish Republic, and I have found just one entry, so I think it is fairly conclusively not an "English" name, I also searched for Seversen as a variant and there are none at all. I would also bet that there are none in the Irish Republic either.
Reply:the only way is to use records, which will tell you where Grandma's family comes from. That is what I did.. looked at people with that name, in the 1900 census. SOME come from Norway, or Sweden. Others have been in the US since the early 1800s, born in NY or elsewhere.

There is no reason for guessing, in genealogy. All that is needed is to find grandma in the census, find her parents, and where they came from. Certain persons will have their immigration records available from ancestry.com, which, if her parents are among those.. you can probably find the name of the TOWN where they were born.

What you are doing is the most common error that we have here. What anyone "thinks" about where names come from, is confusing name origins with ancestry origins. If a person with a certain name has parents from Ireland, then the person is Irish. Someone else can have exactly the same name, but their parents were born in Germany. Or Denmark.

If you want to post grandma's name (if she is not living), or the names of her parents.. then someone with ancestry can look it up for you and get the real answer.
Reply:Certainly Scandinavian, corruption of Silversen.
Reply:sounds swedish.

How do you monogram a hyphenated last name?

I have four initials. When i sign my initials for something i usually sign the letters from my first name and both letters of my hyphenated name, leaving out my middle name. If i am getting something monogrammed, should i use the beginning letter of my hyphenated last name with my middle name, or leave out my middle name altogether?

How do you monogram a hyphenated last name?
Monogrammed last name example

Mary Jane Doe-Smith

MJD-S

MJDS

both can be done and in a nice font the hyphenation works.
Reply:I have been using my original 3 initals: first, middle and maiden. Since technically my maiden name is how everything is alphabetized the hyphen-last does not get recognition. I have been doing my 3 initials for almost 12 years! Report Abuse

Reply:And don't forget to put your title (HRH, Her Royal Highness) Into a monogram.

it will be easier with all the paperwork if you do it before you join the military because there will not be two you's if you know what I mean.

You can fill out all your paperwork and whatnot ( name plates and patches as well) with one name from the get go
Reply:Do it before. I had a friend when I was in basic that had his named changed right after he got out of basic, and his information is still screwed up.

Don't worry about security issues, as everything nessecary for name changes is covered in the SF86 if you require a clearance.

How can I find out the last name of an ancestor?

My parents divorced when I was four and I have not been in contact with anyone on my paternal side. However, I am really curious as to my ancestry on that side. I know the first name of my paternal grandmother and her married name. I want her maiden name though. I also have the town where she grow up and a range of birth years. How can I find out her maiden name?

How can I find out the last name of an ancestor?
I would start by attempting to see if you can get access to marriage records from the town your paternal grandmother lived in, and see if a marriage certificate/record exists (check town hall or library or similar). I have seen marriage certificates/records before that included the maiden name of the bride, and in some cases the parents of the bride and groom names as well.

Another option, if you can afford to, is travel to said town and do some snooping around in person. It may be expensive and time consuming, but I know it works if you're willing to invest in it and have some luck on your side (my grandfather did just this for a vacation one year and with the help of town officials and adoption officials, helped crack an adoption mystery in our own family)

Good luck.
Reply:LSP gave a great answer. If you have a good long-distance plan and her name isn't "Smith" or "Johnson", you could try calling everyone in the county with her surname and see if anyone knew anything. If you do that, spend some time rehearsing an opening line; something that will assure people you are honest, are not selling anything and don't want money.
Reply:if you have the details of your paternal grandmother search on freebmd fill in details for the marriage you will find info you need, and write all info down including vol and page as you can then go onto ONS and order the marriage certificate, the certificate will have your grandmothers maiden name and her fathers name on it, it will also have the age when she married, you will then be able to search for the birth. if you need help, let me know i can find info for you tonight

OK, now you need to change the "from line" setting.

Mail page%26gt;%26gt;options (top right)%26gt;%26gt;scroll to and click on "general preferences".

At the top of that page, under *Names and Emails*----erase the "old last name" and type in the new name, or a nickname or whatever suits you-----then click "save" at bottom of page.

In case you're using the "New Mail" upgrade----go to mail page%26gt;%26gt;options%26gt;%26gt;mail options%26gt;%26gt;accounts (side panel)%26gt;%26gt;add/edit an account%26gt;%26gt;Yahoo mail (side panel)%26gt;%26gt;edit%26gt;%26gt;general preferences--------and change it and save it.

How do you pronounce this French last name?

I have a French girl in my class. Her last name is Seillier. How do you pronounce it?

How do you pronounce this French last name?
Well, sometimes it depends. It could be Sailor, Say-ler, Si-lee-ay, Say-ell-ee-ay. I have a French last name as well, LeMaster, and people get confused with even that. I mean, c'mon, LeMaster?!? It's barely French! But I do admire the fact that it literally translates into "the master" in English lol. But when I have to spell it (cause people don't know if it starts with "le" or "la") they think i'm crazy. I say "L-E- Capital M" then they stop me and say "wait, is it just master?" and I have to explain it again. I almost feel sorry for this girl, if I get this reaction with my name, just imagine what she goes through with that. It's pronounced la-master, and it doesn't even sound French. But my last name has meaning, as I am related to Charlemagne, the king of kindness, he was a king of france i believe. He is my 28th great-grandfather, and the king of hearts in a deck of cards was based off of him. (like some others are Julius Caesar and stuff...) anyway, hope I helped! If all else fails, just ask her. it must be hard having tons of people each day mispronounce your name, so if you just ask her you can get it right the first time.
Reply:Well, if she's pronouncing it the proper French way, it's "SELL-ee-ah".

An "s" in the beginning of a French word is always pronounced like an "s". The "ei" combination is always pronounced like the "e" in "let". The double L's have a regular L sound. The "i" and "e" have regular long vowel sounds. The "e" is a bit hard to figure out, since there are many different ways "e" gets pronounced in French, with no real rules about it. However, it's definitely not "aye", as E's are only pronounced like that if they are accented. And the "r" at the end of the "ier" ending is silent.

Of course, because of the corruption of languages over the years, she may not pronounce her last name like this at all. I once knew a girl whose last name was Jacques--just like the French boy name, so you'd think it was pronounced "Zhock". Nope. She pronounced it "Jakes!" Talk about screwing up a beautiful language. So it's best to ask your classmate how she pronounces her own name.
Reply:I could tell you three ways to pronounce it, but I can't type it in very well. I would just ask her how she wants you to say it.
Reply:i would pronounce it

What is involved in changing your last name?

What steps does someone have to take to change their last name? What paperwork and fees would be involved and how long does it normally take?

If someone could step me through the process, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

What is involved in changing your last name?
You need to consult with a lawyer first. I did the process is 2002 and it was completely painless. It costs about $600, but you have to state a reason for changing your last name. As long as it's nothing too outrageous (i.e. changing your name to Charlie Manson), then you're ok. Once the process is complete, the lawyer will provide you with a final judgment from the court and about 10-12 notarized copies to show to the various institutions (bank, DMV, Social Security, etc.) so that all loose ends are tied up. I hope this helps!
Reply:It all depends what state you are in. Most states require that you contact an attorney and fill out some papers that have to be filed with the court. Civil Court. You can also go to a civil court in your community and file the papers yourself. You pay the fee...several hundred dollars. It all depends what state. Then you wait about six months and you get your new name. The time frame could be 3-six months but no less time. Go to your civil court and get a booklet on "Name Change." Good luck.
Reply:Consult a lawyer. You will have to pay Est.$300-500 dollars at the most. In some cases you have to put public notices in newspapers, etc.

It is more difficult if you are a minor because both parents have to be notified and if one parent objects it starts getting complicated and more expensive.
Reply:Go down to the courts, probably Probate Court, and check with them. Fees are different everywhere but a few years ago, it was $80 where I lived in OH. I'm sure that has gone up a bit now and I've not heard how long it takes. Just depends on when you go before the judge to discuss it and what they decide.
Reply:see your district or probate court clerk. tell them your intent. they should walk you through the steps. for me, I had to type up a formal request in legaleze and their specified format. Also, I had to pay about $200. You have to sign an affidavit attesting that your birth certificate, driver's license, and social security # is valid. They do a background check on you. The judge will issue you an "order" allowing you to change your name. I had to make the name change announcement in the newspaper, and personally change my life documents with the according institute; Social Security office, DMV, schools, etc....oh from beginning to end...it took about 2 months...Good luck!

How do u officially change your last name?

I've always had my mom's last name (its very complicated %26amp; hard to spell.) I would really like to have my dad's last name (it's very simple %26amp; easy to spell) Also, I'm trying to make it so that my abuser cant locate me and my kids. (domestic abuse) Thankx in advance!

How do u officially change your last name?
You file a petition to change your name with the Court that has jurisdiction over such cases in your community; and appear before the court to obtain te order. Many court's publish the forms for people to do it themselves. Attorneys generally do not charge much for the service. The hardest part is notifying all the people %26amp; agencies (eg. Social Security; Driver's license; banks; credit cards; kid's schools, etc) who need to know.
Reply:YOu petition the courts to change your name legally. It's very easy though a bit expensive. Call your local Circuit Court Clerk to get more information.

What is your opinion of couples getting married and choosing a entirely new last name together?

I just read an article about couples who create a new last (when they marry) name sometimes out of combining their maiden names. What is your opinion on this?

I personally don't see why a woman should take her husbands name... or why a man should take his wife. If marriage truely is about equality and starting new lives together than surely new last names make sense.

I like the idea of both keeping their old last names as middle names too.

What is your opinion of couples getting married and choosing a entirely new last name together?
I've only known of one couple who created their new last name. He was a Steeves and she was a Lee and they created Steflee (I'm not entirely sure of the spelling; I typed it phonetically).

I started with 3 names, first, middle and last. I personally have a double last name now that I've married; it includes my original last name and my husband's last name - without a dash, just a space. I feel dashes are for children who acquire both parents' last names.

I have encountered situations where it is easier to have one last name though and I have "cards" and paperwork with 3 different last names, my original, my husband's and the combination of the 2. As long as you are not using it for illegal reasons there is no law against going by different names.

A friend semi-lost her original middle name as she no longer used it when she married. She used her maiden name as a middle name and used her husband's last name as her last name. I hate the idea of losing a name so my full name would be 4 different names: first, middle, last and my husband's last.

I think it would be cool to create a new name together but it just depends on the type of man you hook up with. It's a very personal issue.

PS: For 30+ years I thought I would never change my name but my husband and I had lived with one another for 11.5 years before we married so I figured nothing would really change so decided to change my name so there was something symbolic about the ceremony. As well his children have since come to live with us so it's really nice to all share our last name together.
Reply:You know, I always thought I would neve change my last name if I got married. Both my parents have passed away and theres only me and my brother left with our surname so I felt it an honour to keep it.

Since my fiance and I got engaged I have turned around and cant wait to take his name...I will always be part of my family and that can never be taken away from me, but I can see why we change names in marriage now....to start your own family.

I dont like the idea of taking another name altogether though, that to me is wrong and disrespectful to the family who are actually entitled to have that surname, it ain right
Reply:I think it's a personal choice that each individual gets to make for themselves. I have no problem with people changing their names when they want to. Personally, I would never change my name - I will die with the same name I was born with - but if someone else chooses to do it differently, it's fine with me too! It's a very, very personal choice.
Reply:Thats a novel idea. And if it works for the couple, then why not?

Im getting married in few weeks, and having problem deciding about my new surname. I currently still have my ex-husbands surname.

My fiance's culture %26amp; tradition is to take their father's first name as the next generations surname (eg: their own first name, son of, their fathers first name, following me?). So if I take his surname, I am in fact taking his fathers first name as my surname, but at least I will have the same surname as my husband. But in his culture, that basically makes me his sister..lol. So he suggested i take his first name as my new surname. But that would make me his daughter! And I certainly am not taking my own fathers first name as my surname.. too weird (and Im 41 years old!). I cant possibly suggest your idea above, as he would then be disrespecting his father and their culture. Decisions, decisions!
Reply:I don't have a problem with it at all. I think each couple should do what they think is right to make them happy. If they want to make up a new name...then so be it. If she takes his name...good for her. If he takes her name...more power to him.
Reply:I think people should be able to do whatever they want, as long as it's just. Choosing a new name is certainly just, it doesn't affect anyone but them, so who cares.

I didn't take my hubby's last name because I can barely pronounce it.
Reply:I'm just going to keep the name I was born with... I like the idea of us both keeping our identities even if we choose to marry.
Reply:I've been married twice and both times have taken my husbands' names because I liked them a lot better than my own maiden name.
Reply:just leave it.

its been this way for ages.

What do you have to do to get your last name changed, and keep all of my records?

I can keep my first and middle.

What do you have to do to get your last name changed, and keep all of my records?
You can change your name either legally or by common usage. Common usage means just pick a name and use it all the time for everything. Legally you can change your name by going through a formal court process. There are a few things you can't do;

change your name to avoid debt or to do something illegal,

take the name of someone else like Ronald McDonald and then sell hamburgers

You can't use numbers or symbols or profanity or racial slurs

You will have to figure out what your individual state requires as far as Legally changing your name, most require a petition and a court order as well as affidavit of consent if you are a minor.

Once you have a name change you will want to notify everyone of that change, including social security, creditors, employers, passports, banks, etc, basically notify everyone of your new name.

Good luck who ever you are!

Once you get the decree, you send copies to the DMV, SSA, your school, doctor, magazines, insurance company, . . .. You get a new Driver's license, SS card, insurance card, passport . . .

If you are in the UK, say so and one of the UK people will explain deed polls to you.

As to records - you just add a note to all of your job applications, school applications, driver's license renewals, etc. that you were known as Bart K. Smith until 01 July 2009, and Bart K. Jones afterwards. Then, for instance, if an employer wants a college transcript, he/she can send for it from the college using the name you used when you were a student.

Reply:You are in the genealogy forum. This is not a genealogy question. This is a legal question, and the laws will vary by state, and the fees will vary by county. Contact your county courthouse for the details in your area.

Okay my last name Is Obenshain and I really wanted to know my Family Coat of Arms or family crest?

I prefer the coat of arms but the family crest is just as fine

if you have information plz tell me thank you!

Okay my last name Is Obenshain and I really wanted to know my Family Coat of Arms or family crest?
Cant find a coat of arms for that surname. If you are a USA Obenshain you probably descended from a family that emigrated to the US on the ship "Fane" in 1749. One of the sons went to VA and formed that branch of the family. The name is found with various spellings in documents, It appears as Obenchain in another spelling. Don't let the coat of arms peddlers sell you a Shane or Chain coat of arms as your own, it's not.

If you go to the Wikipedia article on Schwaigern, Germany you will find a coat of arms for the town of your Heritage and some sense of origins and birthright.
Reply:Please see the link below. The British College of Arms is the most authoritative source on the subject.

http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/Faq.ht...

There is no such thing as a family crest. A crest is part of a coat of arms. Coats of arms do not belong to surnames. Actually, they really don't belong to families, except in France or Poland.

They were and are granted to an individual man.

Only his oldest son is entitled to his when he dies. All sons obtain one with some differences. There are some that are not hereditary. I understand men that are knighted cannot pass theirs to their son. Also there have been prominent American men apply to the British College of Arms and had one granted and from what I understand theirs are not hereditary.

Actually, there might have been more than one man with the same surname, not all necessarily related, that were each granted their own coat of arms, all different. No one peddler that sells them on the internet, at shopping malls, in airports, in magazines etc. will have all of them.

They don't need to in order to sell to the gullible.

Also, most men with that particular surname were never granted a coat of arms.

The surname product business is one of the biggest scams around. They will usually have a small disclaimer in fine print. House of Names will say it is up to you to trace your family tree to see if you are descended from someone who bore a particular "family crest"(they all use the misnomer family crest). They go on to state that no families not even royal houses can make sound claim to the right to bear arms without documented proof that they are entitled to them.

How can a company use Glade as a registered trademark, Glade is my last name?

I know this may sound like a stupid question but, i am serious

How can a company use Glade as a registered trademark, Glade is my last name?
Because the company is using the name to name a THING, not a person, and can thusly have the name of the "thing" be trademarked...

Why do people worry so much about having their last name online?

Is anyone really gonna find out exactly where Juan Lopez lives just by his name?

Serious question, why do people worry so much about it?

Why do people worry so much about having their last name online?
Lets try , give me your full name and the state you live in and lets see if i can figure out where you live.

Anyone with acess to ancestry.com or anyone that can search whitepages.com, it is very easy to find where someone lives.
Reply:Now with Kids that is another story all together! This kind of place is where the sick people look for their victims. I would hope that the kids on here would even have Email blocked and not even give out their first name's. For the reason I give below.

Truly there isn't a problem with putting your last name on the net. If the bad person wanted to take your Identity there are much easier ways to do it. One would be to invest $40 with people finder and get a lot of information on anyone they wanted and then do a little fishing and get everything but their shoe size.

A lot of the scare over 鈥渋dentity theft" on the internet is for people to sell you credit cards, services and many other things. I had my credit card number stolen by ordering pizza on the phone. The bank caught it right away.

What a person should be careful of is places like share bare, kaza and other places where you get "free" stuff. To get the free stuff you have on let your fire wall down. Then everything on your computer is open to any one who wants to get at your stuff.

I have my last name all over the net and the worse thing that has ever happen is that I was notified by a bank person in Africa that one of my great uncles died and left me a lot of money.

And yes I could find out exactly where Juan Lopez lived by his name and other clues from his answers. You have no idea how much information is on the net, even living people鈥檚 birth information.

Your Social Security number is what you really need to protect! How many credit applications have you filled out and put your SS# down without a thought? I bet even some of them were on line or through the mail. That鈥檚 the information the bad guys are fishing for and getting every day!
Reply:Maybe because ID theft is the number one crime. Read some of the books, such as "How to Be Invisible" by J.J. Luna. He says that in the city of New York, he can find out everything about any one with just their name and date of birth.

That was everything: address, phone number, where that person works, the address and phone number of the work place, spouse's name, childrens' names, social security number, driver's license number, passport number...

Get the point?

Of course, not everyone is so good at this thing, but, hey, why chance it?
Reply:It is so easy these days for people to steal identities. And although it's a long shot, every precaution is advised.
Reply:uh yea. its called white pages dot com buddy.... people put up enough info after a couple of months and it wouldnt b that hard to find someone
Reply:Identity Theft more then just finding out where they live
Reply:I think that people worry about revealing too much information to strangers because it isn't the safest thing to do. There are preditors, thieves of identity, people out to cause harm to others, etc. and you just have to take care not to give away information that can give these people access to other information. You read in the papers and hear on the news stories about how someone has been scammed or has been taken advantage of. You cannot be too careful. You are advised not to give out personal information and I think it is a wise decision to keep these facts to yourself. It isn't necessary for strangers to have this information anyway.
Reply:the goon squad might find them
Reply:Identity theft, for one thing. As for kids under the age of 16, it is mainly due to the prevalence of child predators online and/or trying to find kids to lure them into kiddie porn. For an example, I have a page on the Bebo friendship site and I wanted to email the girl who designed this pattern I liked and wanted to ask if she could send me the code for it or if it would work on MySpace. The administrators on Bebo wouldn't allow even that type of email to be sent to her because she was only 13.

Why do I have to type in email or last name of someone when I try and add them too my myspace?

Anybody know? Everytime I try to add someone on myspace they ask for last name and email, for just about EVERYONE. Even people when they dont change their profile so their lastname or email is needed.

Help?

Why do I have to type in email or last name of someone when I try and add them too my myspace?
If the person you're trying to add is under 18 (or 17?) MySpace automatically adds that feature to keep the pedos away. Best bet is to contact this person in real life and get their last name or have them add you. :)

The person has no control over it. Sorry.
Reply:Some people have this set on their privacy settings, or if they are under 18 it will automatically do it unless they turn it off. Send them a message if you can asking them to add you.

Why is Barack Obama is referred to by his last name and Hilary Clinton by her first?

Why do you think for the most part people call Barack Obama "Obama" and Hilary Rodam-Clinton "Hilary"?

Why is Barack Obama is referred to by his last name and Hilary Clinton by her first?
Because there are two clintons in this race. Obama sounds better than Barack....
Reply:Hillary Clinton uses her first name on her campaign signage. I suppose to distinguish her from Bill AND to give her a more friendly, approachable tone.
Reply:its just what people do.

He can also be reffered to as Barack, but people like me, prefer Obama.

I call the Hillary, Clinton.

SO i guess it just goes either way.
Reply:How many Obama's do we know that we could confuse one with the other?

There's only ONE Obama.

How many Clinton's do we know where confusion would set in as soon as the name "Clinton" is mentioned without clarification as to whether it's Hillary or Billary.

There actually are THREE Clintons: Hillary, Billary, and Chelsea(ry).
Reply:Hillary

reminds us of Sir Edmond Hillary her name sake who concored tall mountains

barack sounds like a huge BELCH.
Reply:well, i dont think obama would like to be called hussein
Reply:Well, first, there Bill was President once, so while kinda a stretch its fair to say its reasonable to call Hillary, Hillary to distinguish between the two,

Second, Barack doesn't roll off the tounge like Hillary, if Hillary had kept her own last name, this wouldn't be a problem,

Third, the media tends to call Obama, Obama and Hillary, Hillary which makes it, unfortunately, much easier for us to think in the same terms.
Reply:Both McCain and Obama are referred to by their last names. Maybe Hillary so that she's not confused with Bill????
Reply:Interesting question.....
Reply:Because we know Hilary.

We just met Obama, sorry I still don't know him well enough to call him Barack.

I would call Al Gore, Al. or Bill Clinton, Bill. I would even call George Bush, Sh*@ head.

Inlies our problem as Demacrats. Get it together people. Before Condolezza joinns McCain while we throw mud on eachother. You don't really want Howard Dean to lead the process in deciding?
Reply:Her people's research showed that it's harder to attack her when you call her Hillary. seems like your being mean to a woman and all that.. rather then "Senator Clinton" which makes her more of an open target. So they've pushed folks to say Hillary. it's what is on all her banners and stuff. Obama's say "Obama" and McCain's say "McCain"
Reply:Because we know Hillary and Obama is a stranger.

Because we want to differentiate between Bill and Hillary, rather than just saying "Clinton."
Reply:I think Obama sounds Good! However some would think negatively about his name, considering the way things are in world today."Fear" Of Name %26amp; Religion! Obama has a musical ring or sound to it!

Reply:Clinton will always be Bill, so Hillary is... well Hillary.

And Obama, well... that's his surname.
Reply:I sometimes refer to Barack by his first name. I refer to "Hillary," so people will know I'm not referring to Bill Clinton.
Reply:This is easy

Because McCain and Sen. Clinton's believers want Obama's believers to believe his is Muslim so they can Hopefully change their beliefs and ultimately their votes

It doesn't matter that there are 2 Clinton's only one is running for president now. Everyone knows who's running.

How many fans would Dale Jr have if his last name was not Earnhardt?

Don't get me wrong.I think he is one of the most respectable drivers in NASCAR.He respects NASCAR's past drivers and he'll admit when he causes an accident.

How many fans would Dale Jr have if his last name was not Earnhardt?
I really think that Jr wouldn't have many fan's if it wasn't for his last name ,just as he wouldn't have many fan's if it wasn't for his sponsor either . He is a sub par driver
Reply:Thanks for the 10 point's . Guess we will find out just how many true fan's Jr without Bud and a team mate with a driver that the majority of Jr fan's despise. Wonder how many fan's are bandwagon jumpers and like him just because everyone else does?

I don't "hate" Jr I just don't pull for him Report Abuse

Reply:If the family name really determined "popularity" then it seems to me that any driver named "Petty" would be near the top of the list. After all, Richard "The King" Petty was very popular in his day. Certainly didn't rub off on his son or grandsons, did it? Report Abuse

Reply:Give him Kudos he has taken less than mediocre talent and a famous last name and brokered a lucrative contract. Had his name not been Earnhardt he would have never gotten into Busch much less NASCAR. The only pit he would be in is the local Jiffy lube! Report Abuse

Reply:Dale, Jr. is one heck of a driver and sure his last name has give him some help but his Dad is not the one in the seat of the #8 car driving it, so give Dale,Jr. credit where credit is deserved, he's good and No one can deny him of that.

You go Junebug.
Reply:still a good amount of fans. His overall personality and

and persona speaks for it self.
Reply:The same number of fans as say, Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart. They all have about the same number of wins as Jr, but they also have champioships. So maybe they'd be even more popular than Jr. He's an average driver, without the last name, he is nothing. Everyone just seems so blinded over his daddy, last name, sponsor.
Reply:The question is, would he even be in Cup without his father? Without having good equipment given to him all his life, would he even have been able to get where he's at now?
Reply:Not many, as he is just an average driver at best.
Reply:I would guess he wouldn't even be in racing. Uh, his father WAS racing along with the King #43.
Reply:about an eighth of what he has now...but some of it is talent...you haven't seen people go berserk over Kerry Earnhardt but you would if he improved drastically
Reply:I'd still be one of his fans, but there probably wouldn't be as many fans if he weren't an Earnhardt.
Reply:He would still have a lot of fans, I just don't think that there would be the "JR Nation" that there is today. I like Kyle Petty alot, never was that crazy about the "King". I like Carl Edwards and Jamie McMurray (both Missouri boys), I am from MO however Rusty Wallace could pound sand for all I care. See, there are connections and not.
Reply:Without his name fans wouldn't even know him. He would be working in a McDonald's Drive - Thru and watching NA$CAR like everyone else.
Reply:he'd be just another mid pack driver
Reply:I think that he would have no fans, because no one would have ever heard of him.
Reply:He'd be known as a nice decent driver like Kasey, Mears, Hamlin and some of the others, but as for being considered a "star" or "talent" he'd have nowhere near the publicity and fans he has today.
Reply:He wouldn't have as many as he does now. He is a great driver, young and good looking so i wouldn't count every fan out! I'm sure the majority would be the female nascar fans!

Go Jeff Burton!!!!!
Reply:I think he'd be just as popular. Give fans some credit, if he was a jerk or something he'd lose popularity regardless of his name.

He is a good driver, he seems to be as much of a likeable guy as his dad was, so why not like him?

(I say this without really having a favorite NASCAR driver... I like it, but it's not my number one thing).

What is a good, ironic last name for somebody who should be happy and friendly?

I am creating a story about an old man who has no friends because he is so bitter towards others, and I don't know what to name him.... Mr. ____? Is there any kind of symbolic name for a happy person or someone who is friendly and kind? It could be of any origin, I just want my story to sound interesting. Thanks in advance!

Reply:Some good suggestions so far. I would suggest you try to use one that is an ACTUAL name -- NOT names like "Mr Cheerful", which is too obviously manufactured, and sounds more like what people would call a dour person to make fun of him.

The best might be "Blythe" (older spelling of "blithe", and how the SURNAME is usually spelled), which means:"joyous, merry, or gay in disposition; glad; cheerful"

"Bliss" is another possibility. Or "Smiley" The slight difference in spelling for this name, as for Blythe, may make it more appealing, since the irony is clear enough, yet the spelling difference, since it is legitimate, makes the whole seem a bit less contrived.

Or how about "Merriman"/"Merryman" (old term for a jester). Again, the spelling difference might help (not to mention the slightly different pronunciation from "merry man").

Along the same lines, you might possibly consider a name like "Leithart" -- it SOUNDS like "light heart", of course, but doesn't actually mean that.

In another time I might have suggested "Gay" (and I know people with this name), but nowadays the alternate usage is sure to distract.

I commend Lana's efforts, but her suggestions seem too erudite for your purposes -- foreign names that the common reader would not know the meaning of are not likely to make your point.

- Alegria: which actually means "joy" "happiness".

In English you could use:

- Bristow: (British Origin) means From brihs, pleasant, bright.

- Manners ( like.. he has none.. could be very ironic and funny).

In French:

- Bellamont (origin: Fr.) De Bellamont, from the fair or beautiful mount. De Bello Monte.

- Allure : Which means like beauty or charm.

How do i write my last name in Mayan Heiroglyphics?

Hi can somebody please tell me how to write my name in heiroglyphic. Its for a school project. I would like to write my last name "GALVEZ".

How do i write my last name in Mayan Heiroglyphics?
This won麓t write your name in maya hieroglyphs. It will simply translate your English font to Maya font.

http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=maya...
Reply:booo..... That font page really is useless to actually make meaningful Mayan words, you might as well use wingdings it would be about as acurate. stupid voters. Report Abuse

Reply:Sorry to say but that font page is a load of crap.

The Mayan language can not be translated in that way. The Mayan script is logosyllabic combining logograms (which represent whole words) and syllabograms (which represent syllables). As well there were also glyphs representing place names and the names of gods but not individual letters, the language just doesn't work that way. That was part of the problem with the "key" Diego de Landa compiled matching Mayan syllables to the 27 Spanish letters. It just didn't work. They Mayan he forced to write it simply did his best to match the sounds of the Spanish letters to Mayan Syllables.

You would need to figure out the syllables of you last name and find the glyphs that best match it. Even then there would be multiple options.

I would suggest that you write your birthday or the day your project is due, something like that would be a lot easier unless your teacher specifically asked you to write your last name.

How, when and where did the human race name each other with a first and last name?

Have you ever wondered why your parents gave the name you have? Does anybody know when naming ourselves began and where? Also, the naming of our geographical makeup of cities, states, countries, etc.

How, when and where did the human race name each other with a first and last name?
In the stories and tales of the golden age of Greece we see only the use of first names. When we get to the Roman Empire we begin to see two names, a first and last, sometimes only depicting where they are from as a last name.

The names of our geographical make up were to a large extent brought over from Europe and the names of towns and cities that people were from were used as well as being named after people. For instance New York was initially called New Amsterdam when it was a Dutch Colony and then when it became an English colony it was renamed New York, after the Duke of York. Dover, Delaware was named after Dover England. New London, Connecticut was named after London. Frankfurt, Kentucky was named after Frankfurt, Germany. Many towns and cities in California, Arizona and New Mexico are named after saints. There doesn't appear to be any particular rhyme or reason that was followed for naming everything.
Reply:If you are a Christian you will believe that the first name came when God gave Adam the instructions to name everything. I have heard that the last name came from things like where you were from, or what your father did. This was because as the world started to get populated their were several people with the same names and so to tell who you were talking about you would say James of Big Lake if that is where he was from. Or if there was already a James of Big Lake they would choose the profession of your father, James Carpenter, I think that is why there are so many Johnson's,because John was a very common name and they would refer to the child that was John's son eventually turning into the name Johnson. I did some research and found out that my married name means Garbage collector. Pretty funny!!
Reply:In Europe, surnames began to be used in the 12th century, but it took several centuries before the majority of Europeans had one. The primary purpose of the surname was to further distinguish people from one another. In the 13th century about a third of the male population was named William, Richard or John {mainly because people have a habit of naming children after famous people and/or family members (who were originally named after a famous person)}. To uniquely identify specific people, people began referring to different Williams as William the son of Andrew (leading to Anderson), William the cook (leading to Cook), William from the river (leading to Rivers), William the brown-haired (leading to Brown), and so on. Eventually these surnames became inherited, being passed from parents to children.

Broadly, most surnames fall into four categories.

Surnames derived from First Names include Johnson, Williams, and Thompson. Most often they are patronymic, referring to a male ancestor, but occasionally they are matronymic such as Robinson. This also applies to names ending in "-ski", as that ending also means "son of"; such as in Grabowski, Kowalski, and Starrski.

Occupational surnames refer to the occupation of the bearer. Examples include Smith, Clark, and Wright.

Locational or Topographic surnames are derived from the place that the bearer lived. Examples include Hill, Woods, and Ford.

Surnames derived from Nicknames include White, Young, and Long.

For the second part of your question, place names are based on discoverer, founders, noted residents, or most recognized feature. America, for example, was named after Amerigo Vespucci by a fellow cartographer named Martin Waldseem眉ller who produced a world map on which he named the new continent "America" after Vespucci's first name because he felt Vespucci had been that regions "discoverer". Often the name might also have derived from the indigenous language form of any of the previously listed sources for place names (such as in Milwaukee and Oklahoma).

How do you pronounce the last name Calviello in Italian?

How do you pronounce the last name Calviello in Italian?
Hi. It's "cal-vee-Ello". The capital shows where the stress is. The "L" is pronounced like the "L" in "luck". The double "L" is a prolonged "L".
Reply:Actually, the i here has a y sound, not an ee sound. Also, it is important that you "double" or prolong the "l" sound for the pair of l's.

You must put the accent on the 'E'.

I'd say Fresh-Oor. But I suppose some can have a variety of pronunciations. But yep, this is probably the most likely way of saying it. Hope this helps :)

"fresher" would be the bastardized English version of the French name. Like when people pronounce "Fournier" as "Four Nee Er" when it is "Four ne yea"

How do I change the last name on my daughters birth certificate and how much would it cost? Live in Nebraska?

I gave my daughter her fathers last name even though we were not married and now he is not even around got into trouble and went back to Honduras.

How do I change the last name on my daughters birth certificate and how much would it cost? Live in Nebraska?
You will have to go through your county court and file for a name change. You can call the court and find out about filing fees and the process in which you will have to file because each county and state is different.
Reply:This is the genealogy forum. Your question is not a genealogy question. It is a legal one. Genealogists are not lawyers.

However, the laws to this vary by state and the fees vary by county. You need to contact the local county courthouse in your county for the specifics in your area.
