Can creditors report to bureaus with old last name?

A collection company for a rental car agency has contacted me via mail to collect a debt. The catch is, they're using my OLD last name. I had my last name changed over a year ago.

Are they still able to report to my credit report (negatively) even though they don't have my last name correct and they don't have my social security number???

Please note however, that my old last name is listed on my credit report under previous names used.

Can creditors report to bureaus with old last name?
Without having your social security number, yes they can, as long as they have other vital information about you. Therefore, your best would be to pay-off the car rental debt immediately, even if it would mean borrowing from any of your close friends.

Besides, you could negotiate the debt by offering a lower amount. You might be lucky; there is no harm in trying.

Reply:Of course they are; it's still YOU AKA. The ONLY name they HAVE Is that one.
Reply:yes they can.
Reply:Absolutely, your social security number that identifies you, not your last name. You can change your last name a thousand times but you can't change your ss#.

I have offers through the mail that they butcher my name to the point that is not even my name. However, I still can open an account under those names because it still associates with my ss#

People get married, divorced etc... still be reported.

Next time read before you signed anything. Any loans, credit card debts always have interest. Your defense is you didn't sign that they can charge your interest will not stand. You and everyone in this world know that banks make money by charging interest. You may want to take care of it now before it gets out of hand. Any delay will not be in your favor.
Reply:yes, they can definitely do this.

We're talking about rental car charges - how much can it be? Just give them their money and save your credit.
