What is involved in changing your last name?

What steps does someone have to take to change their last name? What paperwork and fees would be involved and how long does it normally take?

If someone could step me through the process, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

You need to consult with a lawyer first. I did the process is 2002 and it was completely painless. It costs about $600, but you have to state a reason for changing your last name. As long as it's nothing too outrageous (i.e. changing your name to Charlie Manson), then you're ok. Once the process is complete, the lawyer will provide you with a final judgment from the court and about 10-12 notarized copies to show to the various institutions (bank, DMV, Social Security, etc.) so that all loose ends are tied up. I hope this helps!
Reply:It all depends what state you are in. Most states require that you contact an attorney and fill out some papers that have to be filed with the court. Civil Court. You can also go to a civil court in your community and file the papers yourself. You pay the fee...several hundred dollars. It all depends what state. Then you wait about six months and you get your new name. The time frame could be 3-six months but no less time. Go to your civil court and get a booklet on "Name Change." Good luck.
Reply:Consult a lawyer. You will have to pay Est.$300-500 dollars at the most. In some cases you have to put public notices in newspapers, etc.

It is more difficult if you are a minor because both parents have to be notified and if one parent objects it starts getting complicated and more expensive.
Reply:Go down to the courts, probably Probate Court, and check with them. Fees are different everywhere but a few years ago, it was $80 where I lived in OH. I'm sure that has gone up a bit now and I've not heard how long it takes. Just depends on when you go before the judge to discuss it and what they decide.
Reply:see your district or probate court clerk. tell them your intent. they should walk you through the steps. for me, I had to type up a formal request in legaleze and their specified format. Also, I had to pay about $200. You have to sign an affidavit attesting that your birth certificate, driver's license, and social security # is valid. They do a background check on you. The judge will issue you an "order" allowing you to change your name. I had to make the name change announcement in the newspaper, and personally change my life documents with the according institute; Social Security office, DMV, schools, etc....oh from beginning to end...it took about 2 months...Good luck!
