What last name should go first for my daughter ?

Me and my girlfriend decided to add her last name to my daughter. My last name is smith her last name soto.. What last name goes first? The fathers or the mothers?

What last name should go first for my daughter ?
like another mentioned, it can be confusing. if i were you, i wouldn't burden your child with having a hyphenated last name. i'd go with Soto as her middle name and Smith as her last.
Reply:In many Hispanic and other cultures the father's surname goes first, then the mother's maiden name goes next. for example: Juan Hernandez and Maria Soler have a child named Rosa. In English the child's last name would be translated as: Rosa Hernandez Soler However, realize that in English speaking countries, we have a tendency to consider the Soler as the last name and Hernandez as a middle name so be sure to write the last name like this: Hernandez-Soler The hyphenated name then includes both last names as an English language last name. Many women are now using both their maiden name and their husbands name by using the hyphenated form, as in Camille Parker-Bowles. So someone having the 2 last names is not uncommon.

Hope this helps
Reply:When Spanish countries, ie, Spain, Mexico etc..., do this, it's the father's name first, mother's name second. For British countries, ie, America, Australia, England, ot's the oppiste. So it depends on which one you are, if you want to follow tradition. If not, however, just do whatever you'd prefer.
Reply:It can go either way. How about combining names without the hyphen? That way, your daughter's name would be Sotosmith. Just a thought.
Reply:the fathers
