How do you pronounce the famous poet Robert Lowell's last name?

I know Lowell is usually pronounced shorter like "lowul" but I read somewhere his name is prounounced "LOW-ELL". Please answer only if you know for sure.

The first syllable is accented; the second is not. So it's more like LOW-ul.
Reply:I'm afraid there is only one person who could tell you the correct answer...and he died in 1977. Face it, Sade pronounces her name "sharday". However, I've always heard the name pronounced "lo-well", with both syllables equally stressed. Unless someone can say they actually "knew" the man and his preference, they'd be speculating. Even my recollection is only based on how other pronounced his name. Gengis Khan had the same trouble :)
