Why do people worry so much about having their last name online?

Is anyone really gonna find out exactly where Juan Lopez lives just by his name?

Serious question, why do people worry so much about it?

Why do people worry so much about having their last name online?
Lets try , give me your full name and the state you live in and lets see if i can figure out where you live.

Anyone with acess to ancestry.com or anyone that can search whitepages.com, it is very easy to find where someone lives.
Reply:Now with Kids that is another story all together! This kind of place is where the sick people look for their victims. I would hope that the kids on here would even have Email blocked and not even give out their first name's. For the reason I give below.

Truly there isn't a problem with putting your last name on the net. If the bad person wanted to take your Identity there are much easier ways to do it. One would be to invest $40 with people finder and get a lot of information on anyone they wanted and then do a little fishing and get everything but their shoe size.

A lot of the scare over 鈥渋dentity theft" on the internet is for people to sell you credit cards, services and many other things. I had my credit card number stolen by ordering pizza on the phone. The bank caught it right away.

What a person should be careful of is places like share bare, kaza and other places where you get "free" stuff. To get the free stuff you have on let your fire wall down. Then everything on your computer is open to any one who wants to get at your stuff.

I have my last name all over the net and the worse thing that has ever happen is that I was notified by a bank person in Africa that one of my great uncles died and left me a lot of money.

And yes I could find out exactly where Juan Lopez lived by his name and other clues from his answers. You have no idea how much information is on the net, even living people鈥檚 birth information.

Your Social Security number is what you really need to protect! How many credit applications have you filled out and put your SS# down without a thought? I bet even some of them were on line or through the mail. That鈥檚 the information the bad guys are fishing for and getting every day!
Reply:Maybe because ID theft is the number one crime. Read some of the books, such as "How to Be Invisible" by J.J. Luna. He says that in the city of New York, he can find out everything about any one with just their name and date of birth.

That was everything: address, phone number, where that person works, the address and phone number of the work place, spouse's name, childrens' names, social security number, driver's license number, passport number...

Get the point?

Of course, not everyone is so good at this thing, but, hey, why chance it?
Reply:It is so easy these days for people to steal identities. And although it's a long shot, every precaution is advised.
Reply:uh yea. its called white pages dot com buddy.... people put up enough info after a couple of months and it wouldnt b that hard to find someone
Reply:Identity Theft more then just finding out where they live
Reply:I think that people worry about revealing too much information to strangers because it isn't the safest thing to do. There are preditors, thieves of identity, people out to cause harm to others, etc. and you just have to take care not to give away information that can give these people access to other information. You read in the papers and hear on the news stories about how someone has been scammed or has been taken advantage of. You cannot be too careful. You are advised not to give out personal information and I think it is a wise decision to keep these facts to yourself. It isn't necessary for strangers to have this information anyway.
Reply:the goon squad might find them
Reply:Identity theft, for one thing. As for kids under the age of 16, it is mainly due to the prevalence of child predators online and/or trying to find kids to lure them into kiddie porn. For an example, I have a page on the Bebo friendship site and I wanted to email the girl who designed this pattern I liked and wanted to ask if she could send me the code for it or if it would work on MySpace. The administrators on Bebo wouldn't allow even that type of email to be sent to her because she was only 13.
