I want to legally change my last name. Should I do it before or after I join the military?

after

Less issues with security/background checks

it will be easier with all the paperwork if you do it before you join the military because there will not be two you's if you know what I mean.

You can fill out all your paperwork and whatnot ( name plates and patches as well) with one name from the get go
Reply:Do it before. I had a friend when I was in basic that had his named changed right after he got out of basic, and his information is still screwed up.

Don't worry about security issues, as everything nessecary for name changes is covered in the SF86 if you require a clearance.

Can I suggest a name?

Reply:Definitely do it before if you still can. It can take a while, though, if you're not doing it after a marriage or divorce. A legal name change requires you to petition the court, etc.

Good luck!
Reply:Why do you want to change your legal name? As long as it is not for illegal purposes, there is no problem.
