I believe it is French, or jewish, but i am probably wrong.
Does anybody know what nationality the last name of Levitre is?
I think it is french.
Reply:Well, it looks French, but I tried translating it and it doesn't translate into anything at all. Of course, that doesn't mean anything.
Reply:Isn't Levitra a form of viagra?
Reply:New York Passenger list 1820-1957 has 15 and several have their nationality as French and a couple Russian.
Ancestry.Com shows 2 Levitre immigrants from France and 1 from Sardinia
In genealogy it is always found that the best thing to do is to trace the person not the name. The same name can come from more than one nationality. There could be Jews named Levitre and some people with the name not be Jewish.
In Orthodox and Conservative Judaism it is only necessary to have a Jewish mother to be Jewish, not necessarily a Jewish father.
They state you get the nation from the mother and the tribe from the father. If a person doesn't have a Jewish father, he belongs to the tribe of the nearest male relative on the mother's side of the family.
In other words, a person can have the name O'Brien and be Jewish if they have a Jewish mother. But a person can have a surname generally associated with Jews, and not be considered a Jew by Orthodox and Conservative because he does not have a Jewish mother.
If you ever want to trace your family, there are lots of people on this board that can give you some great ideas. Just ask.

Reply:Levitre directly translated in french is "the glass or window". It could have older origins though.
